Gujrat University

Gujarat University was formed under the Gujarat University Act of the Government of Gujarat in 1949 as a teaching and affiliating university. It was established under the recommendation of a committee headed by Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar for rearrangement of university education in Bombay State.[6] Many universities were established later which resulted in decrease in jurisdiction of Gujarat University. It is an affiliating university at the under-graduate level and a teaching one at the post-graduate level. Close to 300,000 students study at university in the courses, faculties and affiliated institutes. The university caters for external as well as enrolled students. Affiliates include 285 colleges, 35 approved institutions and 20 recognised institutions, as of 2014. Gujarat Arts and Science College, popularly called Gujarat College, is one of the oldest colleges in Ahmedabad.Gujarat College was founded by Mr. Hope in 1860 but later saw a period of inactivity. Sheth Ranchhodlal Chhotalal restarted the college in the 1870s and his family donated much land and the money for the construction of the Arts College, the science centre and other buildings. Engineer Himmatlal Dhirajram Bhachech who worked on the Ellis Bridge is one of the persons responsible for the architecture of the buildings.Many notable people like Vikram Sarabhai, Kasturbhai Lalbhai and the poet Dalpatram studied here. Mahatma Gandhi also visited the college to encourage students to join the independence movement..

The university was founded on 18 October 1920 as a 'Rashtriya Vidyapith' ('National University') by Mahatma Gandhi, who would serve throughout his life as the kulpati (chancellor) and all needs of Fund collected by sardar Vallabhbhai Patel by his personal relations and capacity. The Gujarat Vidyapith was started in Dahyabhai Mehta's bungalow behind the Kocharab Ashram (the Kocharab Aashram was started in barrister Jivanlal Desai's bungalow). Its purpose was to promote educational institutions run by Indians for Indians outside the financial and governing control of British authorities. The university helped nationalists establish a system of education for all Indians, thus proving the country's independence from British-run institutions and de-legitimizing the British Raj. Its foundation was one of the important event of an initiative satyagraha launched by Gandhi as a means to peacefully terminate British rule in India.

The college was set up in 1937, over a decade before Independence, with a view to inculcate the spirit of Indian culture and academics in students at a time when receiving a British education was stressed upon. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel along with Ganesh Mavlankar and Kasturbhai Lalbhai played a key role in setting up L D Arts as one of the first grant-in-aid colleges in the city. L. D. Arts manages one of the greenest campuses. Founded by Sheth Shri KasturbhaiLalbhai and named after his father Lalbhai Dalpatbhai, the College has been rendering yeoman service for almost six decades. L. D. Arts College is managed by the Ahmedabad Education Society that boasts of 20 institutes of excellence in Ahmedabad. The College was started during the dark days of foreign rule to instill a spirit of nationalism and humanism among the youth and help them attain a combination of character and academic excellence. Even in the changed academic milieu of today, the institution continues to be guided by the traditions and goals of the founding fathers."
